Teacher Tutorial


The purpose of this Tutorial is to provide all instructors with a step-by-step procedure on how they can design courses and questions, create classes and invite students, assign exams and finally deploy exams with confidence publicly and privately and still protect copyrighted materials.

Signing-up

First you must sign-up:

  • Choose a username and a password. Entering a correct email is important to confirm your registration. Don't forget your username! It can't be retrieved for the moment (will change in next version).

  • You should document correctly your country and time zone of residence, in order to take the exams in due time.

  • Type the two words in the captcha area (this is to avoid machine registration)

  • Click on the Submit button

Logging and editing profile

To log in and edit your account:

  • Click on "log in" on the tab bar. Enter your username and password. Click on Sign in.

Two modes are available for creating exams: easy and advanced. You can switch from one mode to another by editing your profile from your Dashboard.

By default when creating a teacher account, easy mode is set. However, any modifications to the exams in the advanced mode cannot be transferred to the easy mode exams.

Easy mode

In easy mode, you can only create exams and allow them to be publicly available (like those displayed on our home page « Featured Exams », « Top Rated Exams » or « Most Taken Exams »), or generate a secret URL to allow people around you (colleagues, friends, students, ...) to take them online privately.

From your Dashboard you can:

  • create exams with ease
  • offer various types of exams such as multiple choice, true/false, essay, or a combination
  • associate a widget (such as HTML Widget like embed code from YouTube), Picture, or Rich Text to their exam questions (the widget will then be integrated above each question and displayed during the exam).
  • publish exams with copyright or creative commons licenses
  • allow colleagues re-use public exams and questions
  • assign a numerical value to exam results
  • automatically generate comments based on performance
  • have their exams graded automatically

Advanced mode

In advanced mode, you can manage courses and pools of questions, you generate exam templates from these courses, you manage classes where your students register, and you schedule exams for these classes. Advance Mode is a very powerful environment to manage a long term life cycle of exams as a teacher or an instructor.

Online exams can be created within the advanced mode in 3 steps. Their sequence must be respected as illustrated below

Step 1: Designing Courses, Questions and Exams

In the Dashboard area start by clicking on “New Course” to create a course and its Master list of questions.

Fill in all required fields * and validate by clicking “Save”:

Prior to creating questions a course with its chapter(s) must be defined. You can either create questions or import them in bulk from a XML or CSV file.

Click on "New Question", select the type of question you want to use and accordingly type your question before finally relating it to a chapter that has already been created.

A response duration of maximum 99 minutes and 99 seconds may be defined for each question.

Four key types of questions are available:

  • Multiple Choice: In response to a question (that may include a widget such as HTML Widget like embed code from YouTube, Picture, or Rich Text that will be integrated above your question and displayed during the exam) the respondent chooses from multiple answers. To indicate the right answer(s) tick the right box in front of each answer.

  • Essay: In response to a question (that may include a widget such as HTML Widget like embed code from YouTube, Picture, or Rich Text that will be integrated above your question and displayed during the exam) the respondent writes an answer in essay format.
  • True-False: In response to a question (that may include a widget such as HTML Widget like embed code from YouTube, Picture, or Rich Text that will be integrated above your question and displayed during the exam) the respondent selects from two options: True or False. 

  • Weighted Answers: Every answer is weighted for accuracy.

By clicking “Save and continue” you can and repeat the above process until you have designed enough questions to generate an exam. Once you have created all your questions, click “Save and quit”.

Clicking on “Back” will get you back to your Dashboard.

Designing Exams

From your Dashboard click on “New Exam” to create an exam from your Master list of questions, and assign it to a class.

Fill in all required fields * in “Designing Exam” window:

  • Secret URL (this can be communicated to anyone you want to take this exam, even if the exam is not public)
  • Course (Select a course for this exam. The questions will be extracted from the question pool of this course)
  • Tags (You can enter some keywords that categorize your exam. If the exam is public, it will help indexing it. Use comma as separator)
  • Scoring Mode (select your scoring mode)
  • Public (Check this box if you want your exam to be public: then other teachers can offer it to their students, and students will be able to take it on their own)
  • Sell Exam (if you want your students to pay to take the exam)
  • License Type (Different license types are available to manage your rights and share or not your exam with other users of ExamGeneral.com)
  • Auto-graded (If you check this, the results of you students will be corrected automatically by our application. Of course, essay questions won't be corrected. You can choose to give these results immediately after they submitted to your students (Immediate Grading) or only after the end of the exam (Delayed Grading)
  • Questions can be generated randomly or picked manually
  • Click “Save”
 
Once you have designed your exam, click “Back” to return to your Dashboard

Step 2: Creating Classes and inviting your students

From your Dashboard click “New Class” to create a class.

Fill in all required fields * in “My Class” window:

  • Start Date (indicate the opening date of your class. Students won't be able to join in before this date. You can modify this date at any time)
  • End Date (indicate the closing date of your class. You won't be able to assign exams to this class after the closing date, and students won't be able to join this class after this date. You can modify this date at any time)
  • By clicking “Save and Continue” the system will automatically generate a unique Class ID for each class that you have created. You can then communicate the Class ID to your students, and allow them to join your class.

Step 3: Assign, deploying and correcting exams

Go to “My Dashboard” click “Assign Exam” and then click on the name of the Exam that must be assigned (Remember: selection is made from the list of Exam that you have already created in Step 3 called “Designing Exams”.

Deploy Exam

Finally select the classes to which you have decided to deploy your exam and specify details such as start and time, date, anonymous, proctored and grading system before your click “Submit” for validation.

Now your class has been assigned an Exam. The list of your scheduled exams can be viewed from your Dashboard (scroll down at the bottom of the page – you can also view the same list by clicking “More...” a new page called “Deployed Exam List” will then open informing you of the status).

About “Anonymous”: If you click Anonymous, the name of the exam taker(s) will not be displayed for teachers correction, in this way the correction is fully objective because those exam taker(s) who have taken the exam are not identified during correction (useful option).

About “Proctored”: If you click Proctored, when the exam will start, exam taker(s) will not be able to take the exam until the teacher has personally validated the list of the exam taker(s) who have been authorized to take the exam, because the teacher is considering that they are "present" in a way or another (for actual class exam settings). However it's up to the teacher to authenticate his/her exam taker(s). The system cannot perform this task and authenticate exam taker(s) by digital photographs, fingerprints and signatures, but the system can provide the teacher the way to be sure that an exam taker who has not been validated by the teacher will not be able to take the exam remotely without permission, even if he/she belongs to his class.

Once you have deployed your exam, your students can take it. Remember that in the advance mode you must first allow your students to join your class prior to letting them take the exam (refer to step 5 about Class ID). The Exam name will then appear in the "Student Dashboard" under "My Scheduled Exams".

Exam Correction

Exams can be auto-graded by the application (this option doesn't apply to essay questions) with immediate or delayed grading delivery to the students and automatic score comments can also be defined by the teacher while designing the exam.

Deployed exams and their current status can be seen from your Dashboard. If you haven't chosen the auto-graded and automatic score comments, you'll then need to click on the exam name and then comment the results manually.

Selling Exams

As a Teacher, you may sell exams or ask your students to pay a participation fee for attending your online classes. This option must be activated inside the Teacher Profile from your Dashboard. Selling Exams and class subscription requires a valid PayPal Account. You may then define your default exam/class fee.
